Electrolysis Hair Removal

Many people are faced with the problem of embarrassing unwanted hair every day, and spend significant amounts of time on temporary remedies like waxing, depilatories, tweezing, and frequent shaving. For those people, electrolysis hair removal can be a godsend.

Electrolysis is the old heavy hitter in the world of permanent hair removal. This process destroys hair at the roots using needles and electricity, has been around in one form or another since the late 19th century and gained popularity throughout the 20th century.

Electrolysis machines use needles equipped with very fine probes which are inserted into individual hair follicles without breaking the skin. When the probe has been properly positioned within the targeted hair follicle, an electrical current passes through the probe and destroys the follicle so that it is incapable of re-growing the hair. Electrolysis differs from other forms of hair removal because none of the others affect the follicle; they simply remove existing hair, which is soon replaced by new growth, requiring another round of removal.

Because electrolysis must remove unwanted hair one follicle at a time, it is a lengthy procedure, requiring many of those with large areas of excessive hair to undergo numerous sessions. Because electrolysis can be somewhat painful, some people are reluctant to complete the process, but for most of those suffering from an unwanted hair problem, the small amount of discomfort involved is entirely acceptable.

Electrolysis is a hair removal procedure usually performed by those trained and licensed to do so, although home electrolysis kits are becoming increasingly popular.

Cost of Electrolysis Hair Removal

Professionally done electrolysis can be expensive, and those done by dermatologists usually cost about 30% more than those performed in hair removal clinics and beauty salons. Electrolysis treatments normally cost between $50 and $70 per hour, and the number of hours needed to complete treatment will depend on the amount and density of the hair to be removed.

Electrolysis offers truly permanent hair removal --a claim supported by the FDA-- but, it is expensive, time consuming and therefore works best on small areas of the body. This fact leaves electrolysis ideal for the upper lip and eyebrows, but not a practical solution for removal of hair on the back or legs.
